AISHA

Aisha held her phone out to Sophy so she could see the post she had just put up a few minutes ago. Already it had received over a thousand likes and there were a load of comments. That was pretty good going for any 3 a.m. Shattered Mums’ Club post. They usually gained traction quickly, but this was good going for any post. Sophy knew the ins and outs of things better than she did, but it wasn’t the blue sky or sea they were commenting on, or even Sophy’s hair and make-up which did look pretty good even by Sophy’s immaculate daily standard, they were commenting on what Sophy had been talking about.

‘I had no idea.’ Aisha looked at Mel. ‘We had no idea.’

‘What are you talking about?’ Mel took the phone from Aisha and took the video back to the beginning and began playing it. She turned up the volume so Sophy could hear too.

‘Well, here I am on the top deck of a boat, and I feel absolutely terrified like I’m about to fall off the edge of the world and there’s no one to catch me. I’m not sure what’s happened to me lately, but I am so scared of… well, everything. Maybe it’s hormones, maybe it’s being a mum of two, I don’t know. Anyway, I don’t really want to be up here, but I am… so that’s something.’

Aisha watched as Sophy’s face went from confused to horrified.

‘Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God!’ There was a heightened panic in Sophy’s voice that Aisha hadn’t heard before. She squirmed in her seat and darted her gaze back and forth between Mel and Sophy. What the hell was the right thing to say here? Sophy had been suffering on board the last twenty-four hours or so and not just here. This was an anxiety that had been going on for some time, something separate from the post-natal depression she had after Poppy. And neither she nor Mel had noticed it. Aisha felt a heat rush through her body and suddenly her eyes were prickling with tears.

Sophy had her face in her hands and looked like she was shaking. Mel was leaning down by her side.

‘Sophy.’ Mel was using her deepest, most calm voice. ‘Take a moment then take some deep breaths, please. In for four, out for four.’

But Sophy wasn’t listening. She had grabbed her phone and was desperately pressing and sliding her finger, presumably to get to the post. She finally had it and pressed the drop-down menu, that could only mean one thing. She was about to delete it.

‘Sophy, no!’ Aisha stood up and swiped the phone from Sophy’s hand, it went flying across the table and landed a few feet away from them on the floor.

All three women looked at it, all equally shocked, and said nothing for a few seconds. Aisha’s heart was beating so fast she was terrified she might have broken Sophy’s phone, but she didn’t have time to react.
